WOW! That makes the paddocks at the ALMS races look like my "garage" that I used to set up when "wrenching" on my Bigfoot, and by Bigfoot I mean power wheels.

Pfffft. Posers. I changed the ignition switch on my jetta outside. In a blizzard. This is more difficult than it sounds.

You see those a lot on the F1 circuit as well, and generally anywhere big companies have a temporary corporate presence. The cost really isn't all that much greater than a marquee of comparable size, and, as we can see here, they're much more impressive :)

The big difference is the F1 pit is on the racetrack infield, a place designed for this very purpose and where teams can set up well in advance. The rally service park is in whatever parking lot or field the organizers have been able to source for the event, and because it's a parking lot or field teams often aren't allowed to set up until just before the event. Also, at some rallies the service park location changes from day-to-day.

These structures are designed to go up on pretty much any flat, solid surface. They're commonly used for exhibitions, trade shows, and so-on, so are designed to be quick to erect and dismantle.

It's not any less impressive to know that it went up in a day - the opposite, to my mind. It won't have been cheap, but it's a standard rental, not a bespoke structure to be used once and thrown away.

That's from 2011? Even so, you can see some similar structures in the picture. Nice pic, by the way.

Here's one from the Farnborough Air Show in 2012:

Kinja'd!!!

Apparently Boeing and Airbus took $5bn in orders there, so you can understand why they spend money that makes Hyundai's bill look like small change, but those are the same kind of temporary structures, also erected shortly beforehand for a week-long event. When they're not all booked out for something like that, and when you don't want such a huge one, they're not all that much more expensive than a big marquee.

You forgot to include the link or image. Also I think my point is being missed. No manufacturer or team has ever brought something of this scale or visibility to the rally service park, not even close. The Hyundai enclosure is about 50 meters long, 12 meters wide, and 10 meters tall, in a sport where you may have to tear down and move the entire unit as many as three times in a week. To see Hyundai bring something of this size and magnitude suggests to me they're not holding back on their effort this year.

Is the image still not showing up?

Try this . Odd, because I at least get a place-holder when I look at my last post.

"Also I think my point is being missed."

I don't know about that, but it does look to me like we've been talking at cross-purposes because I wasn't arguing with what you say, just adding a little more information.

"in a sport where you may have to tear down and move the entire unit as many as three times in a week."

Just to check, this one's going to be there for the whole week? These things are designed to be erected for that amount of time.

"To see Hyundai bring something of this size and magnitude suggests to me they're not holding back on their effort this year."

Agreed, but they're also spending their money quite cleverly (at least in this case). These kinds of temporary buildings look much more impressive than a big tent/gazebo, but they're only a bit more expensive. Hyundai appear to have spotted an opportunity to throw a relatively small amount of money at something with a big return.

No, not there for a whole week. There for three days, packed up late at night on the third day, transported to a new city overnight and set up ready to go by noon the next day (including all internal electronics, screens, and tools), there for two days, and then transported overnight to a third city. That's why it's impressive to me that Hyundai brought it. Not because of the financial cost but the time, effort, and manpower needed to quickly put it up and take it down repeatedly. That's one of the reasons most of the other teams just use the open-walled canopies with the trailers parked behind, the need to tear down, move 200km, and set it all back up in a 18 hour period

" Not because of the financial cost but the time, effort, and manpower needed to quickly put it up and take it down repeatedly."

They're much the same thing, but yes, particularly if that's just for three days, it's quite a commitment. Still, you might be surprised to realise just how quickly those go up and come down. If it takes ten guys half a day, that's maybe a thousand pounds/dollars/euros in wages - pretty negligible on this scale.

"That's one of the reasons most of the other teams just use the open-walled canopies with the trailers parked behind, the need to tear down, move 200km, and set it all back up in a 18 hour period"

For sure, but I suspect there's a point where increasing your covered area by an extra couple of gazebos, and then rolling in the hospitality area and trailers, you might as well just go for the big third-party temporary building.

Just do it after a drive so you still have some heat in the car and sit with the door closed :)
